Robert L. Stanton

Robert Lodowick Stanton, D.D. (March 28, 1810 – May 23, 1885) was an American Presbyterian minister and teacher who was president of Miami University from 1868 to 1871. He was a graduate of Lane Seminary in Cincinnati and earned his D.D. degree from Princeton University. He was the brother of Henry Brewster Stanton and brother-in-law of Elizabeth Cady Stanton. He became the pastor of churches in Mississippi, Louisiana, and Ohio. He was president of Oakland College in Mississippi from 1851 to 1854 and was professor of theology at Danville Theological Seminary from 1862 to 1866 and was moderator of the general assembly of the Presbyterian Church. Stanton died en route to Europe and was buried at sea on May 28, 1885 at the age of 76.

Citation for correct name (Robert Lodowick Stanton) see Library of Congress/WorldCat listing. Name was wrongly attributed in early work on Stanton genealogy and others worked from this early entry as Stanton signed most documents as "R. L. Stanton." Robert's grandfather was named Lodowick and his original birth certificate (Town of Preston, Connecticut, Town Clerk's Office) lists Lodowick as his middle name. See also index in Henry Brewster Stanton's Random Recollections, 3rd Edition, lists "Stanton, Robert Lodowick." Robert Livingston Stanton is the youngest child of Henry B. and Elizabeth Cady Stanton. Livingston was a name in Elizabeth Cady's family, not the Stanton family.
